Lottie S. McGill

July 3, 1922 ~ January 5, 2018 (age 95) 95 Years Old

Lottie Smith McGill was born to Arthur Neil Smith and Lottie Bomer Smith on July 3, 1922 in Vicksburg, MS. Surrounded by her loved ones, Lottie passed away at her home in Destin, FL on January 5, 2018.

Lottie graduated from LSU in 1943 and on December 21, 1947, she married the love of her life Robert E. McGill, Jr.  As a result of their marriage, which blossomed over the course of 62 years, Robert and Lottie had 5 children, 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. During their marriage, they resided in Baton Rouge and Norwood, LA.  After 1978, they became permanent residents of Destin, FL and were proud members of the First Presbyterian Church of Destin.

After graduating from LSU she worked as an English teacher and as a secretary at Standard Oil during WWII. She was the secretary for Bomer Blanks Lumber Company for 50 years. She loved literature and the English language. Her smile and contagious laughter, as well as her culinary genius (fried okra) will be missed.

Lottie’s legacy is one of love. She was a selfless lady who lived her life with dignity and grace, always putting family and faith first. While she is no longer physically with us, the memory of the way she conducted her life-with unwavering love and respect for friends, family and God is a guiding star for all of us to follow, while navigating our earthly journey.

She leaves behind Thomas B. McGill, his wife, Anice of Fordoche, La., Mary McGill Lower, her husband, Fred Lower of Middlebury, Vt., Robert E. McGill, III and wife, Leah McGill of Destin, and Gordon R. McGill and wife, Elizabeth of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She is preceded in death by her son, Daniel Clifford McGill; her granddaughter, Teri McGill; and her husband Robert E. McGill, Jr.

The family wants to give special thanks to Emerald Coast Hospice, and to her caregivers (Lottie’s Ladies): Martha Beers who lived and cared for her the past 6 years, as well as Mary Sanchez, Marie Hoover, Patti Buchanan, and the “Big Hen,” Henri Kelly Love.

There will be a memorial service held at 4 PM Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at First Presbyterian Church of Destin located at 154 Calhoun Avenue Destin, FL 32541. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to First Presbyterian Church of Destin.
