Julian Bond and his brother, James, were a dynamic duo inspiration to me many years ago when I met them in Atlanta's SCLC/SNCC meetings. As I became more involved in "the Movement", I became more respectful of his committment to change the unacceptable conditions African Americans were being required to accept by the majority society in the United States.

He had his moments of despair but he had the courage and enough faith in God to perservere inspite of the harsh realties we were required to face nose to nose, toe to toe. Unfortunately some of our comrades began to have other notions about what it meant to be upright civilized free people. With help of his faith, his wife and a few good friends he overcame that snare and continued to advocate for the human dignity of our people and the civility of mankind. His warrior spirit will forever be a guiding light for me and others were inspired by him. He was an army of one who walked, ran, jumped into the breech innately knowing what was required to do with or without you.

I know his family was also inspired by him, comforted by him and challenged by him to move always forward. Know, too, when others betrayed him his family was there to inspire him, comfort him and challenge him to be the man of God he was meant to be and was throughout his heart and soul.

He is a perfect example, in my humble opinion, of a man, freedom fighter, a family man and friend. He had the lion heart of a Hosea Williams.

Respectfully,

Khali Maddox-Abdegeo, SNCC organizer

I would say thank you for your service. Thank you for standing post. Thank you for your eloquence, your brilliance, and your bravery. Thank you for being a teacher. Thank you for being provocative and making us think. Thank you for challenging us, and making us find the capacity within ourselves to be constructively defiant and understanding what Justice is. God bless you and your family for all your sacrifices.

I Never got to meet Julian Bond in person. I always admired his Biography. He graduated from Morehouse college at thirty. Yet he was a National Political figure by the time he was 25. He lost a congressional race yet rose to become the Chairman of the NAACP and also the President of the Southern Poverty Law Center. He truly lived a Great American Life and his legacy is that of a person who kept moving inspire of the obstacles that he faced. He truly will be missed and will continue to serve as a inspiration to me.

As a Georgia native, I followed Julian Bond's career starting in my childhood. My father, Evans Harris, attended Fort Valley State College when Dr. Horace Mann Bond was its president. During the Civil Rights era, as Julian Bond rose to prominence, my father told me that he often saw the Bond children on the Fort Valley campus. My father later studied at Atlanta University when Horace Mann Bond was a professor, and became active in the Civil Rights Movement in Georgia.

I remember when Julian Bond was denied his seat in the Georgia legislature. He was a brave, tenacious, and consistent legislator and general political leader. I finally met Mr. Bond in 1971 when he spoke at Brandeis University during my freshman year. Of course, he was powerful and engaging speaker who outlined ongoing black Civil Rights issues and political strategies to the audience. When I talked with him afterwards and named the counties where I lived in Georgia and Alabama, he focused on them as black-majority counties. In recent years, with attempts to totally dismantle the Voting Rights Act, Mr. Bond continued to stress the importance of its re-fortification. Certainly, Horace Julian Bond's exemplary life of political engagement gives us inspiration to continue our twenty-first century struggle(s).
