James C. “Jim” Hughes, age 96, passed away on December 31, 2018 at Fort Walton Beach Rehabilitation Center to be with his Lord and Savior and join his wife, Ouida, mother and father and 3 brothers. Jim was born in Hartford, Alabama on July 11, 1922 to Hasty and Julia Hughes. Jim is survived by his son, Bill; daughter, Charlotte (Mike); daughter, Brenda (Jerry) and sister, Fay.
Jim was a USMC veteran and a USAF veteran. He began a Civil Service career on June 5, 1946. After retiring from Civil Service, Jim took a position at Okaloosa Walton Community College where he organized and set up its first Publications and Materials Center. In 1950 Jim was given the opportunity to work at Choctawhatchee High School as an Occupational Specialist charged with identifying and working with potential high school dropouts, which was a position that Jim truly enjoyed as he worked at attempting to “make a difference” in many troubled children’s lives.
Jim has lived a life dedicated to his family, his church and most importantly, his God. A graveside service for Jim will be held at 12:00 pm on January 7, 2019 at Beal Memorial Cemetery, Dr. Howard Gates will be officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Baptist Church of Fort Walton Beach, Florida.
