Senator John McCain passed away today at age 81 at his ranch near Sedona, Arizona. McCain represented Arizona in the Senate for three decades, and twice ran for president with his reputation as a “maverick.” The son and grandson of four-star admirals, McCain was a naval aviator during the Vietnam War when his plane was shot down on a bombing mission over Hanoi. As a prisoner of war, he endured years of brutal torture yet refused an out-of-sequence early release. The injuries he sustained during the war and captivity left him with lifelong physical disabilities. Senator McCain will be remembered for his bravery, heroism, principles, and unwavering dedication to his country.
