Tribute

Katrina “Tena” Sibley McLaughlin passed away peacefully on January 24, at Fort Walton Beach Rehabilitation Center, surrounded by many who loved her.  She was born in Birmingham, Alabama on December 21, 1926, where she lived until her Mom and Dad moved to Auburn.  Tena graduated from Auburn High School and attended Auburn University.  It was there that she met the love of her life, Maurice McLaughlin, and they married on April 13, 1946.  They began their young married life in Crestview but moved to Fort Walton after the birth of their first child, Elaine.  Two years later Lynne was born and after another four years their third daughter, Cindy, was born.

Tena was a wonderful cook, she made sure her family was together at dinner, she volunteered at her girls’ schools, taught Sunday School, and she attended their various functions.  Her family was the center of her life.  Her home was always a place for others to gather.  She supported Maurice, traveling with him when he served in the Florida House of Representatives and the Florida Senate.  They also enjoyed traveling to many locations in the United States, Central America, and Europe.

Tena was Bowlegs Queen XX in the early 1970s and a former member of the Junior Service League of Ft Walton Beach.  She enjoyed reading and playing bridge.  She had many fond memories of her bridge partners throughout the years. Her most loved activities were those surrounding church, beginning at First United Methodist Church and then at Shalimar UMC.  She and Maurice loved their Sunday School classes at both Churches, the Supper Club at Shalimar Methodist and the many tours taken by members of their church family.  She also found comfort in the Bible Study Groups she attended and her Disciple Classes.

Tena was pre-deceased by her parents, Grigsby Thomas and Kate Sibley and her husband of 54 years, Maurice, and her son-in-law, Steve.

She is survived by her loving brother, Tom Sibley of Atlanta, (Sandi), and her daughters, Elaine Stewart (Ken), Lynne Handsel (Roy), and Cindy Martin. She has 7 grandchildren, Ashley Brown (Eric), Laura Stewart, Jenna Stewart, Kristopher Handsel (Emma), Nathaniel Handsel, Brittany Granby (Ryan), and Trent Martin.  There are 4 great-grandchildren, Jackson Brown, Karoline Handsel, Clayton Handsel, and Hayden Granby.  Tena leaves many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.

The family wishes to thank the very loving staff at FWB Rehab Center and Chaplain Chris, Social Worker Michelle, and Nurse Olivia at Emerald Coast Hospice for their compassion and the love they gave so readily to Tena and her family.

A Celebration of Life will be January 30th at 11:00 AM, in the Sanctuary at Shalimar United Methodist Church.  Interment will be a private family service.  Flowers are acceptable, Memorials to Shalimar United Methodist Church for Blessings for Children or the Bread House or to a charity of your choice.
