Marylaide Newell

Mrs. Marylaide Granaghan Newell, resident of Fort Walton Beach, FL, passed away on January 23, 2020 at the age of 91.  Marylaide was born in Lexington, KY on April 30, 1928. She graduated from Florida State University in 1951.  She worked as a teacher in Okaloosa County for many years.

Marylaide is preceded in death by her husband, Lt. Col. Donald Newell, retired U. S.  Air Force, oldest son, Jeffery Newell of Fort Walton Beach, and brother, John T. Granaghan, of Dallas, TX.  She is survived by her sons, Mark Newell (Toni) of Fort Walton Beach; Michael Newell (Jill) of Shalimar, and Stephen Newell (Norma) of North Augusta, SC.  She is also survived by her grandchildren, LT Michael H. Newell, USN (Minju) of Norfork, VA; Bailey Roney  (Brett) of Montgomery, AL;  Ryan Newell of Fort Walton Beach; Nancy Newell of Atlanta, GA; Drew Newell, of Moab, UT;  Brittany Newell of Augusta, GA, Rachael Rutherford (Tom) of Baltimore, MD; and Taylor Gann (Cristal) of Brunswick, GA and Kyle Bernhardt (Margareth) of Westminister, CO; three great grandchildren;  sister-in-law, Nancy Granaghan, of Dallas, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Marylaide graduated from Florida State University and met her future husband there marrying upon graduation traveling to numerous military bases with her family.  She was a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority and served as a member and past president of the local Panhellenic Association. She was a school teacher at Pryor Junior High School teaching English until retiring in 1980. Marylaide enjoyed playing bridge, heirloom sewing, the arts and local music symphonies. 

Visitation will be held at Shalimar United Methodist Church, Shalimar, FL,  on Tuesday, January 28, at 10:30 am with funeral services shortly thereafter at 11:30 am.  A celebration of life will be held at the Fort Walton Yacht club after the funeral.  Private burial will be held at a later date.
